German History in the St. Louis Area
The first German immigrants began coming to St. Louis in the mid to late 1830's. They came to Missouri with the promise that it was the "American Rhineland". Many of those immigrants settled north of the city in the New Bremen community in the area that is the Hyde Park Neighborhood today. Sometimes the only thing they brought to the "New World" was the clothes on their backs and the knowledge of their trade. Brewing beer was one of those trades and the Anheuser-Busch Brewery was founded by two Germans. Some of these early German immigrants moved west up the Missouri River. They brought with them their knowledge of wine making and began planting vineyards. The towns of Hermann and Washington were founded by those German immigrants in the mid 1800s. They also established some of the wineries that are still producing wine today, such as Hermannhof Winery, founded in 1852; Oak Glenn Winery, founded in 1847; and Stone Hill Winery, founded in 1847.

Bevo Mill St Louis - The Bevo Mill was built by August Busch Sr. in 1917. It was located halfway between his home, which is located at Grant's Farm, and the Anheuser-Busch Brewery.
