The "Metro East" is the name given to the three Illinois Counties of Madison, St. Clair and Monroe that lie directly east of Downtown St. Louis and St. Louis County. Many of the attractions that are found in these areas can be easily reached within minutes of Downtown. Some are geared towards family fun, such as the three Eckert's Country Store and Farms, Raging Rivers Waterpark and the old Chain of Rocks Bridge Bikeway. Other attractions would interest history buffs such as the Creole House and Fort de Chartres located in Prairie du Rocher, or even the Greater St Louis Air and Space Museum and Cahokia Mounds both found in Cahokia. Collinsville in St. Clair County has the only professional horse racing track, Fairmount Park. And for car racing enthusiasts there is the Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison and Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach. Illinois also has its share of unique attractions. Where else can you actually walk across the Mississippi River on a lock and dam but at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam or stand next to the "Gentle Giant", Robert Pershing Wadlow? Both located in Alton. Below is a list of many Illinois attractions.
